Parts of the A140 will be closed this weekend as a third abnormal load in transported across Suffolk. 

A 15-mile stretch of the A140 will be closed on Sunday as Suffolk Highways escorts a 221.8 tonnes turbine from Ipswich Waterfront to Eye Airfield. 

The abnormal load will leave Ipswich Docks at 6am before making its way through Ipswich.

A decision will be made by Suffolk police when the vehicle reaches Bury Road to see if it is safe to continue. If it is deemed unsafe to continue, the load will stop at Old Ipswich Road and the second half the journey will continue on Sunday, November 26. 

A final decision on the route has not yet been made meaning the abnormal load could travel along the A14. 

A spokesman for Suffolk Highways said: "Should the decision be made to continue, traffic will be managed by Suffolk Police to allow the load to travel safely along A14 from Whitehouse junction 53 to A140 junction 51, rolling road closures will be installed along the A14 as we travel west up the east bound side of the carriageway, briefly holding at the Claydon interchange to allow traffic through before continuing to the A140 junction."

The A140 will be closed at the A14 interchange and A143 Scole roundabout and a diversion route will be in place. 

The diversion route will be in place and should be followed, especially by HGV’s until the road is clear. Road users will not be able to pass the abnormal load at any point.

The planned route for the escort is as follows:

  • Exit Ipswich Docks, Cliff Quay 
  • Duke Street to Fore Hamlet
  • Fore Hamlet to Derby Road, travelling along Felixstowe Road
  • Derby Road to Foxhall Road via Tomline Road
  • St Helens Street, St Margarets Street, Crown Street to St Matthews Street roundabout
  • St Matthews Street, Norwich Road to Bury Road/Old Norwich Road junction
  • Old Norwich Road and Old Ipswich Road, Claydon (Bus only section)
  • Travel through Claydon and Barham to A140 Coddenham slip road
  • A140 to Eye Airfield, Progress Power Station
