A school production had a surprise guest at their performance last night as its stars were watched on by Ed Sheeran.

This is the second visit in two months that the Suffolk singer-songwriter has made to Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, which he attended as a teenager.

He was filmed watching a football match and performing for the students on October 3.

During the same week, he was spotted in a fish and chip shop in Ipswich.

"Ed came by the school a couple of weeks ago," said Richard Hanley BEM, Director of Music at Thomas Mills.

"He performed and ran a workshop with the GCSE and A Level students, and stayed and watched a football match.

"He also popped into a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang rehearsal and the children asked him to come - and he did!"

Mr Hanley decided to tell the cast about the celebrity in the audience 15 minutes before the show began.

"I didn't want them to spot him and panic!" he said.

"We told the cast just to do their best - as they would for any other performance.

"They put on a brilliant show."

The team behind the school production manages to turn the show around in just eight weeks every year.

"It is mad," said Mr Hanley.

"We have loads of support from the wider school community.

"It is unusual for state schools to have a whole week off timetable for an immersive theatrical experience.

"The arts are really valued here."

Thomas Mills High School puts on a production yearly - an extracurricular activity that Sheeran also participated in, with roles in Grease and The Sound of Music.

Over one hundred students take part in the play, from leading roles, to set designers, to sound and lighting desk operators.

The tickets sell out each year for the show and, with the final performance tonight, this year has been no exception.
