A Felixstowe rail bridge will close temporarily again at the weekend to allow for repairs to take place following a car crash.

Once the repairs are completed, however, the bridge in Mill Lane should be permanently open again.

Bricks were loosened during the single vehicle crash at 10.30pm on October 26 and a team from rail infrastructure operator Network Rail decided to close the bridge to vehicles to prevent any further damage.

Freight trains heading for the Port of Felixstowe were still able to use the track underneath after workers removed bricks at risk of falling onto the line.

On Monday, water-filled barriers were installed to prevent any further damage and allow the road to reopen to traffic 'in the interim,' although footpaths along the bridge have remained closed until the permanent repairs are carried out.

These repairs are set to take place this weekend so the bridge can reopen on Monday (November 13).

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "It will temporarily close again at the weekend so that our contractor can undertake the repairs to the brick parapet and should reopen again on Monday once repairs are completed."

James Chatfield, of Curtis Way in Kesgrave, has been charged with driving without due care and attention and failure to provide a specimen of breath in connection with a crash at the bridge. 

The 36-year-old has been bailed to appear before Suffolk Magistrates' Court on December 8.
