A Suffolk ice cream maker has scooped a prestigious award for one of its flavours.
Alder Tree's blackcurrant ice cream has been crowned the best in the UK at the Great British Food Awards 2023.
Alder Tree, which is based at Alder Carr Farm in Needham Market, won the award due to its ice cream "instantly reminding" the judges of their childhood.
"The ice cream is reassuringly flecked with small bits of
blackcurrant - but this doesn’t detract from its smooth texture - and it’s perfect served on its own as well as with other ice creams and desserts, the hallmark of a great and versatile ice cream,” the judges said.
Stephany Hardingham at Alder Tree said: "The entire team at Alder Tree are absolutely thrilled to be crowned grand champion of the Great
British Food Awards 2023.
"It is a real an honour to have our product recognised in this way, and
among such stiff competition.
"We have been making ice creams on our family farm in the heart of Suffolk for over 30 years.
"They are made by hand, just like my grandmother used to, packed full of our own and locally grown fruit, with only cream and sugar added.
"We are delighted to showcase the best of British produce using traditional methods and simple, natural ingredients.
"We have had such a fantastic year, winning the Golden Fork for East Anglia in the Great Taste Awards last autumn, starting to supply our first national retailer - Cook - in May and being featured on James Martin’s Saturday Morning in the summer.
"Being crowned grand champion at the Great British Food Awards really is the icing on the cake.”
