A large police cordon remains in place after a murder probe was launched in a Suffolk village. 

About seven police cars and a number of officers remain at the scene of a fatal stabbing in Ipswich Avenue in Sutton near Woodbridge

Forensic vans have also been spotted at the scene, and a police tent has been put in place outside a house along the road.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the incident near MOD Woodbridge Rock Barracks at about 9pm on Sunday. 

Despite the best efforts of paramedics a 37-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was taken to Martlesham police station for questioning where he remains. 

Detectives investigating the stabbing are treating this as an isolated incident and believe there is no wider threat to the public. 

Neighbours have spoken about hearing "hysterical screaming" shortly before 9pm on Sunday before going outside to find a man bleeding from injuries to his front and back

East Suffolk councillor James Mallinder, who covers Sutton, said: "We are totally shocked in the community.

"It is a quiet area on the peninsula and we are deeply concerned and of course, I am deeply concerned for the wellbeing of the family and friends of the victim and my thoughts and prayers go out to them.

"As a local councillor I am asking anyone who knows anything about the situation to please contact the police."

Police would like to hear from any witnesses to the incident, including anyone driving along Ipswich Avenue either prior to, or just after 9pm, who has a dashcam fitted in their vehicle and may have footage that could be of assistance.
