Three Suffolk libraries are preparing to change their opening hours, some of which will be officially extended after a successful summer.

Long Melford Library, in its new home in St Catherine's Church, has announced that it will continue with its summer schedule of opening from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays, following the successful move from its old location at the now-closed Royal British Legion.

Nick Castell, manager at Long Melford Library, thanked the church for its support and said: "Saturdays proved very busy and popular over the summer holidays particularly with families, and we are delighted to be able to continue to offer Family Crafts and Lego Club."

Meanwhile the pop-up library session in Shotley will open on Fridays, rather than Mondays, starting in November.

The last Monday session will be on Monday October 16 with the first of the new Friday sessions starting on Friday November 3.

It will open from 10am to 4.30pm, meaning it will be open for an extra 2.5 hours.

Shotley’s regular Tot Rock session for under 5s will continue at the new time of 10am, with a Care & Share Lunch Club and Dog-Eared Book Group from 12pm, and Healthy Snacks, Lego and Craft Activities for Children from 3.30pm.

Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Council will also be hosting a monthly drop-in advice session on the last Friday of each month from 1pm to 4.30pm.

Brandon library will open on Mondays from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm from Monday November, 13.

It will close earlier on Tuesdays (5pm), Fridays (3.30pm) and Saturdays (3pm) to allow for its new Monday opening.

A family games session and an extra wordplay session will also be launched on Mondays.

The changes are being introduced following a customer consultation and have been approved by Suffolk County Council and the Suffolk Libraries Board.

Mathew Sheldrick, Brandon Library Manager, said: "The Brandon Centre where the library is based offers other services on Mondays so we wanted find a way to open the library to best suit the needs of local people as we know there is a demand.

"We’re delighted to be offering a new activity for families too which we hope will be popular."
