A pair of "passionate foodies" will be opening a deli in Sudbury before the end of the year.

Daniel Price used to run a brewery in Walthamstow in London before he and his family moved to the Suffolk market town 18 months ago.

At the time, a shop premises at 16 Friars Street was available for purchase.

"We looked at a few shops nearly two years ago but you delay for a reason," said Mr Price.

"We loved the premises on Friars Street but it went off the market shortly after that.

"I made a mock-up on my phone of what I could imagine it looking like.

"When it came back on the market it felt like it was meant to be."

Mr Price knew that a deli was on the cards after travelling the length of Suffolk to find products from local producers.

He said: "There were things we wanted to buy that aren't available in Sudbury.

"There are loads of amazing producers in Suffolk and I didn't want someone else to open a deli and regret not doing it ourselves.

"We want to spend our money in our own shop, a place where you can purchase the finest local foods and wines as well as some items from around the world."

Mr Price's wife, Nicola, is from New Zealand, and while she currently works in London the plan is for her to eventually run the shop alongside her husband.

"When we came to Sudbury her head exploded - she said it was like being in Harry Potter!" laughed Mr Price.

While the couple plans to lean into the character of the property, there is still a lot to do before the shop is ready to open.

Mr Price added: "The hope is to create a light space where people can buy products that are both unusual and familiar to them.

"We are hoping to generate some buzz around a tiny shop where you can go to buy weird, delicious and provincial food that is made by people who care about it.

"I'm a bit of a romantic - I want to meet our makers, visit their places of work, watch how they make their products.

"We spent the summer holidays touring Suffolk to find the best suppliers."

October will be busy for the couple while they work hard to get everything in place for the opening.

The Friars Street location was formerly home to Prudent Nellie, a homeware shop.

Mr Price said: "I have a never-ending list of things to do before we open, which is daunting - but what is the worst that could happen?

"If everything falls into place and I don't have a meltdown then it will be great," he laughed.

Mr Price will collect the shop keys on Saturday, September 30, and will be aiming to open the deli on Saturday, November 4.
