A body has been found by a member of the public on a beach in Aldeburgh.

Two Coastguard helicopters and a number of rescue boats were called to the coast of the Suffolk town at about 1.15pm on Wednesday, September 20.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said officers were called to reports that a man had been seen going into the sea at Aldeburgh and had not re-emerged.

The huge rescue mission continued overnight, despite the weather conditions, and was eventually called off on Friday, September 22, with no body found.

Suffolk police was informed that a body was found on the beach in the Fort Green area of Aldeburgh by a member of the public at 9.55am on Wednesday.

Officers have since confirmed that they believe the body is that of the man who was reported missing, although a formal identification of the man is yet to take place.

His next of kin have been informed.

Aldeburgh, Shingle Street and Lowestoft Coastguard Rescue Teams were sent to the scene of the incident last Wednesday, alongside two RNLI lifeboats.

A second, separate search and rescue mission was launched on the coast near Aldeburgh on Tuesday this week after a swimmer was reported missing.

They were found safe and well on the beach.
