Fire crews from across Suffolk and Essex were called to a serious blaze in a Suffolk village during the night. 

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a thatched roof fire in Glemsford, Suffolk, at around 9.55pm yesterday, September 5.

While 10 crews initially attended the scene, as the fire blazed on through the night a total of 17 crews in total were needed to tackle the fire.

A spokesperson for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said around a quarter of the roof was impacted by the blaze.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue released an update in the early hours of this morning.

Incident commander group manager Sally Hammond provided an update from the scene. 

She said: "The attending crews attended very quickly. 

"They got to work very quickly with ladders, hoses, breathing apparatus and they got onto the thatch itself and managed to provide breaks to stop it spreading any further in the proprty. We also did some salvage within the property for the owner. 

 She said the cause of the fire would be investigated this morning. 

She said an investigation into the cause of the fire will take place this morning. 

There has also been a warning to residents living within a two-mile radius of the incident that there is likely to be low-lying smoke on the ground.

An official stop time was issued of 1.35am, but crews remained on the scene for several hours after this to check for hot spots. 

Several support agencies also attended, including Suffolk police, the Environment Agency, Salvation Army, Anglian Water, UK Power Network, and Highways to help with the road closure.
