A 50-year-old art club in east Suffolk is seeking to reverse its town council’s decision to not renew the lease on its building.

The Woodbridge Art Club committee describes the news as “devastating” and a “major blow” to the club, which meets in Tide Mill Way.

Woodbridge Town Council has decided not to offer the tenants a new lease for the property when it expires on March 31, 2024, but instead use it for other community purposes.

But the art club says it is “part of Woodbridge’s cultural riverside heritage”, providing a space for all people to gather, learn, and hold events and exhibitions.

Members also say they have invested in the property since first leasing the “dilapidated” building in the 1970s.

Suffolk Coastal MP Therese Coffey has written to the town council and the mayor in support of the renewal of the lease.

The MP said: “After 50 years, and despite the club being in almost daily use with over 120 members, I was disappointed to hear of their struggles to get their lease renewed. I hope that the decision will be reviewed and reversed.”

Woodbridge Town Council says they took the decision in light of the cost of living crisis and spending cuts that have left voluntary and charitable organisations struggling.

The council also believes the building needs extensive renovation, including a new roof, and that funding can be raised if it is used as a community facility rather for a private club.

Mayor Eamonn O’Nolan said: “The council is of course working closely with the art club to assist them in finding a new home, and we will meet with them again early in September.

“We have spoken to other organisations managing properties on our behalf in the hope the club can continue to flourish and grow from a new venue in the town.”
