Business leaders have said they've been left "upset" after a fire broke out in a Bury St Edmunds dessert shop, causing it to temporarily close.

Police and fire crews were called to a blaze at Kaspa's Desserts in Bury St Edmunds at about 8.45pm on Sunday.

The Cornhill eatery was closed on Monday and a spokesman said it would remain shut until further notice.

Mark Cordell, chief executive of Bury St Edmunds Improvement District, said: "I was very upset to hear this news but am pleased that no one was seriously hurt but no doubt it was quite frightening for the staff who were working.

"It appears that there has been some physical and smoke damage to the ground floor, and hopefully this will be dealt with promptly and the restaurant will be up and running again in the not too distant future."

A police cordon was put in place after the fire broke out, but was removed on Monday.

The road remained open throughout the incident.

Diane Hind, mayor of Bury St Edmunds, said: "It is always a shame when a business is impacted in this way, and it is in a prominent position.

"We need the vibrancy of all our businesses to maintain our wonderful town centre. Only recently a visitor commented how they hadn’t expected the town to be so large and to have so many shops.

"We do buck the trend with our offering and I hope Kaspa’s will be back in operation soon, and staff will be supported in the interim.

"I’d also like to thank the fire service who, as usual, have tackled the blaze and kept damage, disruption and threat to life to a minimum."

It is unclear when Kaspa's Bury St Edmunds will reopen.

A spokesman said: "We will keep everyone updated as soon as we know more. Thank you to all our customers for your continued support."
