Suffolk Mind has revealed the majority of the county is struggling to meet its need for movement, meaning people are less likely to be mentally and physically well.

Data from Suffolk Mind’s Emotional Needs Audit, in partnership with Suffolk County Council, which surveyed 12,000 people, revealed more than half of respondents are not meeting their need for movement.

Louise Harris, children, families and young people’s training and content manager at Suffolk Mind, said: “Not only is movement essential for our physical health, it’s important for our mind too.

“When we’re active, endorphins are released which help to improve our mood and relieve stress. Stress is what can cause us to move into mental ill-health.”

The charity has shared the following tips to get moving in a way that works for you:

1. Lunchtime walks – whether you work remotely or in the office, a brisk walk can reduce stress hormones. It can also help meet your need for privacy, or community if a friend joins you

2. Take a dip – swimming is a great way to get moving on your own or as a family. Water-based exercise can also be beneficial for people with limited mobility

3. Home workouts – you can find various free workouts on YouTube suitable for various abilities and ages to get your blood pumping

4. Get your hands dirty – gardening can be surprisingly active and is a fun activity to do with the family. You can meet your need for community too by joining Suffolk Mind’s GreenCare project

5. Join a local club – Suffolk is full of fantastic clubs to help meet your need for movement, community, achievement and more

Movement is one of 12 physical and emotional needs we need to meet in balance to maintain wellbeing.
