A popular event in a Suffolk town's calendar has been cancelled this weekend as heavy rain is forecast.

The Sudbury Regatta 2023, which takes place annually on Friar's Meadow, will not go ahead on Saturday, August 5, after a week of rain left the ground too waterlogged.

The event, hosted by Sudbury Rowing Club, was due to run from 9am to 7pm and was to see all-day rowing races, including sprint eights, take place.

A barbecue, hog roast, beer tent, cake stall and live music were also planned for the day.

In a post shared on the club's social media, Andrew Blit, one of the organisers, said: "Following a week and more of heavy rain, with more forecast, we have taken the decision to cancel The International 2023.

"Not the river too full of water but the ground.

"Such a shame but we look forward to seeing everyone next year."

This year's regatta was to be the 142nd in the town.
