An historic garden in Suffolk has made it into the list of the top 10 free attractions in England.

The Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds has been named the ninth most-popular free attraction in England, according to a survey by Visit Britain.

The survey reveals that about 1,362,874 people visited the gardens in 2022, an increase of nearly 350,000 people in two years.

Furthermore, the Abbey Gardens is one of only two free visitor attractions to make the list outside of London.

This is the fourth year running that the attraction has made the list and ranked fourth in England in 2021.

The only other attraction in Suffolk to have made the list in previous years is Needham Lake and Nature Reserve, near Stowmarket, which came 12th in 2020.

Nearby Colchester Zoo and Adventure Island in Southend have made the list of the top 10 most-visited paid attractions in England this year.

Bury St Edmunds has plenty on offer to visitors and is known as the 'jewel in Suffolk's crown.'
