A Suffolk-based family brewery has applied to open a new premises in a town, converting a Grade II listed building from a retail shop to a drinking establishment.

Courtyard Brewery in Gosfield, has applied to Babergh District Council to convert a shop into a small, traditional old English 'watering hole' in Sudbury.

The listed building, situated on Gainsborough Street, was most recently used as a gift and clothes shop, Bazaar.

The space, which will be called Courtyard Tap, has already been granted permission to change the colour of the building, and an alcohol licence has been approved.

They already have a premises in Halstead, and like that one, the new space will sell ales from their own brewery, along with other wines and spirits.

The building is split internally into smaller areas, which will be retained as 'snugs', and will come with an open space area outside.

The application has stated that the business attracts a 'fairly limited and niche customer base', tending to be over 40 year olds, and it is not a 'high-turnover establishment', but will provide a very 'location appropriate public house for this area of Sudbury.'
