The roof of a house in a Suffolk village has been destroyed during a large fire and a 75-year-old woman had to be rescued.

Suffolk Fire Service were called at around 8.05am on Friday to reports of a large building fire in Earl Stonham, Suffolk, on the A140.

Fire crews from Ipswich, Mildenhall, and Hadleigh are amongst those continuing to tackle the blaze nearly five hours after the fire service was first contacted.

A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said a 75-year-old woman was rescued from the house, having suffered mild smoke inhalation.

There were 20 crews in attendance working to put out the fire at the height of the blaze.

Multiple crews remain at the scene but several crews have since returned to their bases.

Ian Mallet, risk and resilience manager at Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to a fire at a detached premise around 8.30am on Friday morning. It was fully developed and spread to the roof.

"I responded to the call with two appliances but another six were called as it was so serious. Ten appliances were called out and specialist appliances were called out on top of that.

"Our thanks go to the local farming community and to James Forrest, a local farmer at Mowness Hall, for providing water. Our thanks also go to the local community."

The house appears to have sustained significant damage to the roof, which seems to have completely collapsed. Broken wood can be seen sticking up from the wreck.

The visible windows are smashed, though the damage inside the property is not currently known.
