Firefighters have battled a huge blaze at a health spa overnight.

At its height, 17 crews from across Suffolk fought the fire at Riverhills Health Club and Spa in Bramford.

About a quarter of the building has been destroyed but crews managed to save the main part of the property after the fire started just after midnight.

The fire was surrounded by firefighters using hose reel jets to bring it under control. An aerial ladder platform and water carrier were also used.

Firefighters also used breathing apparatus to enter the building and tackle the fire.

It is thought the fire started in the swimming pool area.

Police and ambulance crews were also called to the scene but no casualties have been reported.

A Suffolk Fire Service spokesman said: "The fire brigade have been fighting through the night and they were fortunately able to save the main part of the building butthere is lots of damage elsewhere.

"A full investigation will take place into the cause of the fire."

Incident Commander, Sally Hammond added: "Crews worked really hard and quickly to save much of the building."

People living in the area were told to keep windows and doors shut to avoid smoke entering their homes.

Four crews remain at the scene and further firefighters are on their way to take over from those who have battled the blaze overnight.

Last year, the spa underwent an "extensive" revamp after receiving a £2.3million funding package.
