A grateful farming family on the Shotley Peninsula will be among a host of Suffolk and Essex farmers offering the public a rare insight into agriculture at the weekend.

The Sucklings will be opening their gates for Holbrook Open Farm Sunday on June 11 as part of a national celebration of the sector - and will be using the event to help a charity close to their hearts.

Chris and Mary Suckling and son Harry held their first Open Farm Sunday last year - and were overwhelmed by the response.

East Anglian Daily Times:

All funds raised went to the East Anglian Air Ambulance - and this year the Sucklings will be donating to the cause again.

Chris credits the Air Ambulance with saving his leg - and his life - after he was crushed between a potato harvester and a trailer several years ago.

His leg was broken in six places and without its fast response he fears he might not have survived.

The Sucklings are determined to pull out all the stops this year as they invite the public onto their farm to enjoy a host of farm activities and attractions.

They enjoyed a "fantastic" event last year - attracting 500 to 600 people and raising £1200 for the Air Ambulance - and hope this year will be even "bigger and better".

"Everyone enjoyed the day with some lovely feedback from our visitors," said Chris.

"We extend our thanks to the amazing team of helpers and companies who sponsored, donated prizes, lent machinery, and helped on the day, all of whom where excited to hear we were hosting another event this year."

The potato growers will be hosting industry experts, farm machinery from their own farm and local dealerships - and livestock.

East Anglian Daily Times:

Visitors will be treated to guided trailer tours of the farm, and children's competitions and activities.

The grain store will be filled with local craftspeople and producers, while the Sucklings' own farm shop will be selling new potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables.

The day will include barbecue, drinks and cakes are available all day with proceeds going to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

"It’s lovely to see how interested people are in the countryside around them, and it’s a pleasure to invite them onto our farm to see more in depth what we are doing and why," said Chris.

"The open day has the added benefit of raising some much needed funds for a fantastic charity, to whom I will always be grateful for their service."

Son Harry added: “After the amazing response from last year's event, we have gone bigger and better.

"We’ll hopefully have more to see and do. With our fantastic helpers, we hope to host another brilliant day for our community, and maybe spark an interest in the next generation."

Tickets are priced £2 with children under three free of charge. Please pre-book via https://www.trybooking.co.uk/CFGX and we are asking that people pre book.
