An ancient traction engine which began its working life in a Suffolk village is set to return as it celebrates its centenary.
The Dorset owners of the rare 1923 Wallis & Stevens oil bath traction engine will be bringing it back home in the build-up to a great Suffolk gathering of ancient machines at the Woolpit Steam Rally over the weekend of June 3 and 4.
The Loader family - which owns the machine - is working with Elmswell History Group and is hoping to steam the engine to the Railway Tavern in Elmswell on Friday, June 2 to mark the 100-year milestone.
Brothers David and Gerald Seeley - who organise the Woolpit Steam Rally - are expecting a bumper turn-out of engines at the event, which takes place at Warren Farm, Wetherden, near Stowmarket.
The Wallis & Stevens engine will be one of three engines not seen before at the show, while another will be returning for the first time in many years under new ownership.
The steam rally's pre-1930 tractor display - which rivals many of the largest shows in the country - is set to feature a "fantastic" display of more than 20 machines - including a very rare Alldays & Onions tractor made in Birmingham in 1920, say organisers.
The rally will also include a special display of hay mowing machinery from the 1880s to the 1960s showing the evolution of the mower from horse to tractor power.
The stationary engine section is expected to number 75 in total - several of them more than 100 years old.
Many will be showing off what they were originally designed for by driving a range of mills, pumps, dynamos and other machinery.
Among the attractions will be a Bamford line shafting display showing one engine powering multiple machines for preparing feed for livestock.
A wood sawing display will show steam, tractor and stationary engine-driven saws making planks, posts and fire wood.
Meanwhile, a large Caterpillar bulldozer will be demonstrating its ability to level soil.
"Anybody who witnessed this last year will know what an amazing sight it is," said Gerald.
He added: "This year we are pleased to announce the return of Mike Rule with his ever popular Steam Gallopers. These will be supported by side stalls, Punch & Judy and a full ring programme on both days to keep the family entertained."
The show will also include display of vintage cars, motorcycles, commercial and military vehicles will complete the display of pre 1965 equipment.
There will be more than 40 craft, trade and auto jumble stalls - as well as hot and cold food, licensed bar and ice creams.
Woolpit Steam Rally takes place at Warren Farm, Wetherden, IP14 3JX, by kind permission of R & P Baker from 9am to 5pm both days. Car parking is free.
