A Suffolk scout troop is organising a sponsored walk to raise money for a new scout hut.

1st Rendlesham Scouts is hoping to raise between £10,000 and £15,000 for the new facility, which is set to be sited just off the A1152 road into the village.

The 84-strong troop was based at the village primary school until the COVID-19 pandemic struck, which meant the scouts could no longer use it.

Assistant troop leader Jen Cross said since then the scouts had not had a permanent home, but the plan was to create a new hut using shipping containers, which would provide a dry space to store kit.

The scouts participate in a range of activities, including archery and Tomahawk throwing, which involves throwing axes.

Jen said the scout hut would be built on land given by Rendlesham community garden.

She added: "We need a scout hut which is somewhere dry where we can store our kit and also provides us with our own space."

The troop has four sections, including the scouts, beavers, explorers and cubs.

The sponsored walk - called the Sandlings Walk - is due to take place from June 23-25 and will feature a 60 mile walk between Ipswich and Southwold.

On the first day, the fundraisers will walk between Ipswich and Woodbridge, followed on the second day by a route between Woodbridge and Leiston.
