The Green Party in Suffolk is set to make history this evening, announcing the leaders of the first majority Green council in the UK.

Mid Suffolk became the first council to be controlled by a Green majority after it fell from a minority Conservative administration.

Earlier this month, 34 councillors were elected, with 24 seats for the Green Party, six seats for Local Conservatives, and four for the Liberal Democrats.

The leader of Mid Suffolk District Council is expected to be Andy Mellen, district councillor for Bacton Ward, and deputy Rachel Eburne, who represents Haughley, Stowupland and Wetherden.

The results will be announced in the Annual Council meeting this evening.

Mr Mellen said: "We're feeling very excited and expectant. It will be the first Green majority council in the UK.

"We saw it coming, from discussions we've had on the doorsteps with people, but the size of the majority was a bit of a surprise. It is very welcome as it gives us a really clear mandate to do the kinds of things we would like to do."

While the Greens have previously run Brighton and Hove as a minority administration, this will be their first ever majority council in the UK.
