A 36-year-old man who armed himself with a Samurai sword in a sheath when police were called after he jumped out of a window has been jailed for eight months.

Sean Reid, who has 157 previous convictions, jumped out of an upper floor window at a property in Trimley injuring his leg in April last year, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

A neighbour called the police and Reid had gone inside the premises saying he was going to get a knife, said Andrew Jackson, prosecuting.

As police officers arrived Reid came out carrying a Samurai sword in a sheath and walked towards them.

He was told to put the blade down and was taken to the ground.

Reid, of Red House Close, Trimley St Martin, admitted an offence of affray and was given a 12 month community order.

On Thursday, Reid was jailed for eight months after admitting breach of the community order, assault, threatening behaviour, criminal damage and three offences of assaulting emergency workers.

The court heard that in February this year Reid had swung a crutch at a man, hitting him on the thigh, during an argument in Ipswich town centre after the man refused to give him a cigarette.

When the victim threw a lukewarm cup of coffee at him, Reid had chased him along Foundation Street and swung the crutch at him again before punching him in the face.

Two days later, on February 25, Reid was arrested after he was involved in a fight in Ipswich town centre and had kicked a police officer on the leg and spat at two other officers.

After being placed in a cell he had headbutted a panic alarm, causing damage to the frame and kicked a wall.

Joanne Eley, for Reid, said her client had been receiving help for his issues with drug and alcohol while he’d been in prison and didn’t intend to relapse when he was released from custody.
