Mayor of Bury St Edmunds Peter Thompson has been suspended from the Conservative Party in connection with an incident in which he received a police caution.

It is understood Mr Thompson,  a sitting Conservative councillor at Suffolk County Council, has been suspended by his party pending an investigation following an incident in the town in early March.

The incident involved head doorman of The Gym Sports Bar Matthew Tate, 31, a Royal Anglian veteran who was medically discharged due to injuries he received during his second tour of Afghanistan.

CCTV footage seen by the East Anglian Daily Times shows an incident involving two men and Mr Tate inside The Gym Sports Bar.

The matter was investigated by Suffolk Police who said: "We can confirm that two men have received conditional cautions following an incident at the Gym bar in Bury in March." Mr Tate was not cautioned.

Mr Thompson is seeking re-election to West Suffolk Council and Bury St Edmunds Town Council at next week's local elections.

Matthew Hicks, leader of the Conservative Group on Suffolk County Council, said: "I can confirm that Cllr Peter Thompson has been suspended from the Conservative Group on Suffolk County Council following an alleged breach of the group rules."

John Griffiths, leader of West Suffolk Council's Conservative group, said: "I can confirm that he has been suspended for breaching Group Rules pending further investigation."

John Davie-Thornhill, chairman of the Bury St Edmunds Constituency Conservative Association, said: "I can confirm that Peter Thompson has been suspended from Bury St Edmunds Constituency Conservative Association following an alleged breach of party rules."

The East Anglian Daily Times has attempted to contact Mr Thompson for comment, but he could not be reached.
