Diversions are in place and drivers are advised to find alternative routes while initial investigations are conducted and the carriageway is cleared and made safe.
Suffolk Police said no details of any casualties will be released at present and that the road will remain closed for a "considerable length of time tonight".
They also thanked drivers for their patience while the incident is being dealt with.
It comes following two incidents on the A14 earlier today, with the eastbound carriageway closed at junction 43 after a lorry hit a tyre.
Elsewhere in Suffolk on the same road, a three-vehicle crash happened near Ipswich this afternoon, with the road now clear.
