"Big changes" have been announced for the upcoming Aldeburgh Carnival following "inefficiencies" from 2022.

This year will mark the 79th celebration in the seaside town, which returned in 2022 following a two-year break due to the pandemic.

Last year, the lantern procession and firework display were cancelled due to the extremely dry weather conditions, leading to the carnival making a loss for the first time.

This year, the voluntary committee has carried out a full review of the existing process for the carnival, including issues surrounding traffic management, the procession and the supporting entertainment.

Volunteers said: "It has been a very positive exercise, and whilst the traditional roots of the event will be maintained, some big changes are also on the cards."

Changes will be made to traffic management, including rolling road closures, reduced parking restrictions and two-way traffic on Thorpeness Road being suggested.

There will be a new addition to the carnival as well, with the waiter race, sponsored by The Suffolk.

This race includes a waiter's tray, with a bottle of champagne, an ashtray and a glass on it, open to all and a prize given to the winner.

The popular Chinese Kites will be back on the beach on Saturday, with an additional display in the evening planned with LED lighting.

Organisers are also looking to provide musical entertainment on Aldeburgh beach on Saturday evening.

Other events such as the procession will continue, with the Suffolk School of Samba returning once again, and the 10k race will still go ahead.

Organisers said: "This event can only be a success if we have volunteers, so please do get in touch if you can support us in any small way, either pre-carnival and/or during the carnival weekend.

The date for the carnival has also been announced, for, August 19-21, and this year's theme will be Tropical Paradise.
