A man in his 50s was seriously assaulted after he challenged drivers who were wheel spinning their cars in a football club car park.
Officers were called to reports of a serious assault at about 11.40pm on Tuesday in Blackhouse Lane.
A spokesman for Suffolk police said the man challenged the drivers of three cars.
The vehicle left the scene but after a short while the same man was approached by about eight people, who punched and kicked him and stole three bottles of alcohol from him.
The victim then went to a friend’s house, who called the police.
He was later taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.
A large cordon has been put in place by police, with forensics officers also spotted at the scene.
Enquiries are ongoing and any witnesses should contact Bury St Edmunds CID, quoting crime reference number 37/15225/23.
