The 100-day countdown to Suffolk Day 2023 begins, with organisers encouraging the public to follow the theme of 'be free in 23'.

Suffolk Day, the annual jamboree celebrating the county, falls on June 21 this year.

Oliver Paul, from the Suffolk Day steering committee, said: "It's your county to enjoy.

"Be free-spirited and adventurous and enjoy the quirks and curiosities that we often overlook because they are on our doorstep."

The starting place for inspiration for Suffolk Day 23 was the 25 Suffolk icons East Anglian Daily Times readers voted for on Suffolk day 2022.

Ipswich Borough Council has confirmed that the annual Suffolk Day gathering of the county mayors will take place on the Cornhill, where the Suffolk Day proclamation from the Lord Lieutenant, Clare Countess of Euston, will be read.

Presentations of the Suffolk Medal will also be made to those who have made significant contributions to the county, with nominations for that still open.

Mark Murphy, BBC Radio Suffolk presenter and initiator of Suffolk Day, said: "With this cold grey weather we're experiencing, it's great to have something to look forward to and Suffolk Day 2023 is going to be fantastic.

"Suffolk has its issues and problems like everywhere but it's a fabulous place to live, work and play.

"So let's pop June 21 in our diary and enjoy the longest day together."

Many of the other events that usually occur on Suffolk Day are happening again including gathering the Trinity, (Red Poll cattle, Suffolk Sheep and the Suffolk Horse) at the Suffolk Food Hall.

Catherine Sheppard, who leads St Elizabeth Hospice’s remembrance service Suffolk Remembers, which takes place on Suffolk Day, said: “Each year Suffolk Remembers is a very moving close to Suffolk Day, as hospice supporters and the local community gather to remember those no longer with us, while standing along the beautiful Felixstowe seafront."

Matthew Hicks, leader of Suffolk County Council, said: "This Suffolk Day, it is important to remember that there is so much of our county that we can enjoy and explore for free, or that helps us to feel free.

"This is what we really want to celebrate this year."
