From the worm moon to planetary conjunctions, here are some things to look out for in the sky this month.
The moon
Phases for March are as follows:
- First quarter - February 27
- Worm Moon - March 7
- This moon gets its name from the worms that appear as the soil warms in spring which invites birds to feed. Other common names are the Goose Moon and the Sugar Moon.
- Last quarter - March 15
- New moon - March 21
- First quarter - March 29
Spring Equinox
On March 20 the sun passes the equator and moves from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere.
The north pole begins to lean again towards the sun and night and day are roughly equal in length.
The planets
Early risers will get a glimpse of Saturn, Mars and Venus low in the southeast just before sunrise.
Jupiter and Venus will have a conjunction early this month with both in the western sunset.
The International Space Station
The space station will be visible above the UK from March 20 to 29.
It will appear in the west/southwest from March 20 to 23 and in the west/northwest from March 24 to 29.
The station will be visible in the early morning with times ranging from 3.30am to 5.30am.
