A Felixstowe schoolgirl has been accepted into a top drama academy – and is asking the community to help her take up this potentially career-making opportunity.

Earlier this month, Katie Mitton, 15, was accepted into the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, a prestigious school based in Woking.

Many famous names have passed through its doors, including singer Pixie Lott, theatre stalwart Bonnie Langford, Love Actually star Martine McCutcheon, and countless besides.

Katie has been travelling to auditions around the country since the New Year began, and was delighted to be accepted into the Italia Conti on February 6.

“It was my third audition,” explained Katie, who attends Felixstowe School. “By that time, I’d got used to turning those nerves into excitement. The best I could do was to show them what I have.”

Katie pulled out all the stops, performing two monologues and singing Vanilla Ice Cream from the Musical ‘She Loves Me’ and Quiet by Natalie Weiss.

Just a week later, Katie heard that her audition had been successful. She now has a place to study a three-year diploma in Professional Musical Theatre, which will commence in September.

However, the costs of living away from home, on top of the school fees, will be high.

Katie’s family are determined that she will be able to accept the opportunity. They have set up a GoFundMe page, and are hoping that the community will show her some support.

“This is an amazing opportunity,” said Katie’s mother, Sarah Mitton. “This fundraiser will help her so much, in being able to achieve her dreams.”

Proceeds from the GoFundMe will go towards Katie’s rent, bills, general living costs, and any specialised equipment she will be expected to buy.

Katie hopes that attending the school will bring her one step closer to a career on the West End stage, and her dream role of Elphaba in Wicked.
