Suffolk County Councillor Richard Kemp who covers Long Melford and Glemsford described the road as "the worst" in all the areas he covers.

Mr Kemp added: "The stretch of road should have been resurfaced last year but it didn't happen.

"The amount of potholes is unbelievable. I think there is about 40 potholes in a stretch of about half a mile of road.

"I went over it on Wednesday night and it is like driving over a tank track."

Mr Kemp said works need to be done as a priority as the road is not safe especially for motorcyclists.

He added: "I cover nine parishes and hand on heart I can say that is the worst stretch of road for potholes in my area.

"It is quite unbelievable that someone on a motorcycle hasn't come off and hurt themselves because it is so dangerous."

Mr Kemp said a number of residents have spoken to him about their concerns of the road and how they want the repair works to be carried out urgently.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Highways said: "Several road repairs will soon be completed along Windmill Hill and Clare Road, Long Melford.

"The condition of the road surface will continue to be monitored and if future repairs are required, these will be raised in line with the Highways Maintenance Operational Plan.

"A section of Windmill Hill has previously been resurfaced, with the remaining section programmed for potential road resurfacing."

In a tweet Suffolk Highways confirmed the road will be closed on Friday between 7.30pm and 11.30pm to allow repairs to take place.
