Much-needed work to the home of a Suffolk scout troop has begun with ground being broken on a new extension as part of a £400,000 project for a new hut.
Initial excavations started at the hut belonging to 5th Woodbridge Sea Scouts in Tide Mill Way this week, with the main foundations being laid in the garden by filling a 7m long trench with 12 tonnes of concrete.
The troop, which has doubled in size during the past year, is looking to create a kitchen extension at the back of the existing building, an enlarged space created by shipping containers and a glass reception and walkway.
The space will enable two sections of the troop to run at the same time, as well as providing changing rooms and disabled access.
Troop leader Barrie Hayter said: “Over the past 12 months, we have more than doubled in size.
“We’ve opened new sections from ages four to 14 and have taken on 75 extra members.
"Despite this, the waiting list has continued to grow and we now have more than 160 young people waiting for spaces.
“We have run out of time slots to start any new sections, so we desperately need the extra space to be able to run multiple groups at the same time.”
Once completed, Mr Hayter hoped that other scout troops and youth groups would be able to use the new facilities for overnight accommodation and to be able to use the troop's water equipment.
Various fundraising events are planned throughout the year to raise money for the project, including a sponsored row of the River Deben, a barbecue at the Woodbridge Regatta, a quiz night and a special raffle with a cruise as top prize.
Donations are being welcomed for the extension plans.
