Pictures have shown the devastating aftermath of a huge fire that ripped through five homes in a Suffolk village. 

A total of 17 Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews have been called to the fire which broke out at a property along the A1101 Bury Road in Hengrave at about 12.30am on Wednesday.

Pictures taken from the scene show a number of firefighters tackling the blaze as smoke billows from the roof. 

The homes have been completely gutted as a result of the fire which has destroyed the roofs of multiple houses. 

Speaking at the scene, station manager Matt Webster, of Suffolk Fire and Rescue service, said: "At the moment we are unsure of cause, but we will be undertaking a full investigation into the cause of the incident."

At midday today a spokesman for the fire service said crews were making "good progress" as they scaled back the response. 

County councillor Rebeca Hopfensperger said: "I was very sorry to hear the devastating news this morning of the fire in Hengrave, my thoughts go out to all involved.

"I understand that emergency services are still on site and have offered support to those involved for which I thank them for."

There is currently a road closure in place in both directions in Bury Road, near to Hengrave Hall and in Mill Road.

It is the second thatched house blaze in the village in the space of a year. 

In April last year, 15 fire engines attended another thatched house blaze in Hengrave.

No injuries have been reported.
