A pub that has been left boarded up has caused some residents in a Suffolk village to fear for its future.

The Five Bells in Great Cornard closed down in September and has been boarded up for the last couple of weeks.

Although the pub is currently on the market with a six-year tenancy available there has been no 'to lease' sign put up on the building.

The Bures Road boozer is being marketed by Michaels Property Consultants, which said it was looking for landlords with a proven track record to take over.

Residents in Great Cornard have been left concerned about the future of the pub.

County and district councilor Peter Beer said: "It has been on the cards for some time now.

"It is a concern for the local residents of Great Cornard.

"They have got to explore all options."

Plans were revealed last year to build four bungalows in the beer garden behind the pub.

Works have already begun on building the three-bedroom homes which have taken over the pub's much-loved children's playground.

As part of the new plans, there will be a further 12 car parking spaces created to accommodate the new homes.

Access to the bungalows will be gained off Bures Road with reconfiguration of the existing pub car park, with associated hard and soft landscaping.

Michaels Property Consultants has been approached for a comment.
