A man who was arrested twice in the same day has been jailed for 16 weeks for drink driving.

Robert Witt of Upper Road in Great Cornard was first arrested at his home on Saturday (December 3) morning for failing to appear at court for various motoring offences and appeared at Suffolk Magistrates' Court where he was given a three-year driving ban.

Later that same day the 50-year-old was stopped once again by police in Head Lane where he was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol, driving whilst disqualified and driving with no insurance.

He was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and was charged with driving with excess alcohol, driving whilst disqualified and driving with no insurance.

He was remanded to appear before Suffolk Magistrates' Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty and was given a 16-week jail sentence and banned for a further 54 weeks.

PC Darren Marshall said: “The fact Witt was in court and given a three-year ban for drink driving offences, only to be caught the very same day shows what a blatant disregard he has for the law and other road users.

"To see him in jail for 4 months will give him plenty of time to reflect on his selfish, irresponsible and dangerous actions.

"It also serves as reminder to all road users of the serious consequences of drink driving – you can lose your licence, get a criminal record and possibly lose your job, as well as potentially killing or injuring yourself or someone else.”
