A luxury Suffolk hotel set in picturesque Constable Country has been named the best place to stay in the East of England by two national newspapers.
The Angel Inn, a restaurant with rooms in Stoke-by-Nayland, close to the border with Essex, has been named a Times and Sunday Times Best Places to Stay 2023 winner in the East category.
The newspapers' guide lists 100 of the best hotels throughout the country, with more people looking to holiday at home since the Covid pandemic.
Praising the hotel, the guide said: "A former gastropub in Dedham Vale, an area of outstanding natural beauty, The Angel Inn has been painstakingly restored, adding five new rooms to the original six and embracing traditional elements to create a snug feel.
"The focus, though, is on fine dining: you’ll want to pack your loose clothing for head chef Ruben Aguilar Bel’s nine-course tasting menu, which turns bread and petit fours from incidentals into masterworks."
Claire Irvin, head of travel at The Times and The Sunday Times, added: "Best Places to Stay 2023 is a celebration of the incredible properties we have here on home soil and, most importantly, the hard-working teams that have made each one of them such a singular success.
"Our recommendations are not easily won and all 100 hotels in this year's list – including The Angel Inn, a labour of love in rural Suffolk – should be extremely proud of the guest experience they've created."
