A man has died after a crash between a lorry and a car on the A140 in mid Suffolk, police have confirmed.

Police were called to the road at Wetheringsett, near Mendlesham, shortly after 10pm on Monday.

The ambulance service and fire crews, along with a critical care paramedic from Suffolk Accident Rescue Service, were also in attendance.

Police believe the car, a silver Ford Galaxy, had been travelling northbound when it overturned onto its roof.

The lorry, which was travelling southbound, then struck the overturned car as it passed.

One of the occupants of the car was located at the scene with serious injuries and was taken to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, where he later died.

Police believe there was a second occupant in the car who fled the scene and has not yet been located.

Efforts to find this person are ongoing, police said.

The A140 was closed overnight before reopening at about 9am on Tuesday.

Officers would like to hear from any potential witnesses to the crash, or anyone that might have seen a lone person on foot in the area just after 10pm.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Joint Norfolk & Suffolk Serious Collision Investigation Unit, quoting reference number 37/75605/22.
