TWO passionate people have become the first couple to tie the knot at an iconic seafront tower.

Perrie Leversidge and Charlie Angus decided to get married on October 21 at Jaywick’s Martello Tower (JMT) on the north Essex coast to show their pride for the area.

They approached JMT and asked if they could get married, but unfortunately the tower did not have a wedding licence so the pair decided to buy one and donate it in return for a wedding ceremony.

The licence will last for three years which means other couples will be able to marry in the tower.

JMT, which is owned by Essex County Council, was originally built in 1809 as one of 103 Napoleonic fortifications. Since opening to the public in 2005 it has hosted various local and international art exhibitions and workshops.

The bride is currently exhibiting one of her art projects at the tower.

Kerith Ririe, tower manager said: “It was an honour for the tower to be the backdrop for such a special day.

“We have already had inquiries about weddings and hope this will be a big step towards enabling the tower to become more self-sufficient.”
