Families in north Ipswich are invited to get on the move as part of a day of free activities designed to get people on the road to a healthier lifestyle.

Those living in Whitehouse, Whitton and Castle Hill areas are invited along to the sessions, which have been backed by local MP Dan Poulter.

The Let’s Get Active Day takes place tomorrow from 9.30am to 5.30pm at the Whitton Sports and Community Centre, organised by Healthy Ambitions.

With statistics showing that a quarter of adults in Suffolk walk for just an hour a week, the charity is hoping to encourage more people to get on the move and improve their health and fitness.

Sessions will include specific low-impact activities for parents and toddlers, older residents, and teenagers.

Speaking at the pre-event warm-up Dr Poulter, MP for Central Suffolk and Ipswich North, said he believed that efforts could be made to engage with communities in order to kick start healthier lifestyles.

“The big challenge for healthcare is about focusing on how we can support people to make healthy lifestyle choices, make the right decisions about what they eat and drink and also helping people engage with exercise, and that’s why this is such a fantastic initiative,” he said.

Louise Parnell, health and wellbeing co-ordinator at Healthy Ambitions, added: “We hope that with Dr Poulter’s help we can attract local people to come along to the centre on the day and spend an hour taking part in a new physical activity.

“This will help them to get active in a social, friendly setting and remind them of the excellent facilities available on their doorstep.”
