People can get fit for free at a new outdoor gym in Colchester’s Castle Park.

The area, designed and installed by Lightmain, has 16 pieces of equipment in two zones, one for cardio work and another for strength.

Equipment at the gym includes cross country skiers, rowers and walkers alongside a leg stretch, leg press and chest press.

Paid for by Colchester Borough Council, the gym was funded through developer contributions.

It is part of Colchester’s 2012 Olympic legacy along with a toddler sand play area which opened in upper Castle Park last month.

Annie Feltham, borough councillor for communities and leisure services, said: “Castle Park is already popular with walkers, runners and cyclists and we hope that this new outdoor gym provides an added attraction for them to visit the park.

“It allows people to use traditional gym equipment in an attractive location and we’re sure it will be a popular addition to our park facilities. It’s important that everyone has access to this small slice of Olympic magic and ultimately we hope to inspire future generations.”
