Today’s high tides in Essex caused the road to Mersea Island to be closed by the coastguard and Essex Police.
The plan dealing with the situation, caused by high spring tides, was put into place this morning.
A spokesman for Thames Coastguard said this closure remained in place until the road cleared again.
However he added the tides were likely to make this a regular occurrence over the next few days.
The spokesman also said the coastguard also assisted in the evacuation of a 64-year-old man from the island who had suffered a broken arm.
As the causeway was closed an ambulance was unable to reach him so he was taken to Peldon on the mainland by West Mersea lifeboat.
From there he was taken to hospital by an ambulance.
