Stowupland woman Alexandra Houghton is planning to raise money for the Diabetes Centre, at the Ipswich Hospital, by carrying out a fundraising walk from London to Cambridge – a total of 62 miles.

Her challenge is taking place on August 28 and she is hoping to raise £1,000.

The 27-year-old, who lives in Felix Road, is a Type 1 diabetic and knows the daily challenges faced by anyone with the illness.

The money Alexandra raises will go towards sending children with diabetes on holiday in Norfolk.

She said: “This is really important work as it gives children and their parents vital support and helps them to understand more about the illness. It also allows children to be able to have fun in a safe environment and feel like they are not alone in dealing with the daily problems caused by this intrusive disease, while allowing their parents a short break from the daily worries of bringing up a child with diabetes.”

Alexandra has been visiting the Ipswich Hospital Diabetes and Endocrine Centre for the past five years and it has provided her with huge support with the management of her diabetes and encouraged her to be part of a medical trial on two occasions, all to help develop better technology to improve management of Type 1 diabetes for all who suffer from it.

“Being part of these trails has also helped to improve the management of my own diabetes, so I’m hoping that by taking on this challenge I can be giving something not only to diabetic families but to the Ipswich Hospital Diabetes Centre for all their hard work and support,” she added.

Her training for the walk started in April and overall during the 20 weeks of training she will have walked approximately 600 miles.
