“We did not know quite how many hearts she had touched”, say the family of Peggy Cole, who died aged 80 earlier this month.

A celebration of life service has today been announced to honour of the one-of-a-kind personality.

Although Peggy anticipated a modest family send-off, it was decided to extend the welcome after an overwhelming show of public affection for the Suffolk countrywoman.

The unexpectant star of television series Akenfield, Peggy went on to become a custodian for country lore and a protector of traditional Suffolk values.

Her death from cancer on January 8 prompted a flood of tributes to the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star, for which Peggy was a long-time columnist.

Her family too received cards, letters and phone calls with words of admiration.

Announcing the celebration of life service at St Mary’s Church, in Woodbridge, on February 16, they said: “Peggy always loved a ‘good funeral’ and had been planning hers for many years. It has made making arrangements very easy for us, her family, as she left very clear instructions.

“Peggy had specified that she wanted a private family cremation followed by a small celebration of life service for her friends. Whilst we have been able to follow the first part of these instructions, we now realise that a small celebration of life service at a Suffolk church in the countryside is not really an option.

“We as a family have been totally overwhelmed by the cards, letters and phone calls received following Peggy’s death. We knew that she was well liked and highly thought of, but we did not know quite how many hearts she had touched – to us, she was simply our wonderful mum and grandma.

“In order that all of those whose life Peggy had been a part of can show their respects we have arranged for a celebration of life service to take place at St Mary’s Church, in Woodbridge, on February 16, at 2pm. All are welcome and Peggy’s family look forward to sharing their memories of Peggy with you all.”
