A spokesman for passenger operator Abellio Greater Anglia website said all lines were blocked from shortly before 9am because of a fatality, reopening in the early afternoon.

A statement on the company’s website said travellers could expect delays of up to 90 minutes, and cancellations.

Some disruption lasted until around 2pm as the service tried to recover.

The British Transport Police was quickly called to the scene of the incident.

A spokesman for the force said: “Our officers are currently at the line close to Parsons Heath Bridge following reports of a person struck by a train.

“The call came into police at 8.51am. Paramedics are at the scene. A person has been pronounced dead.

“Officers will now look to establish the person’s identity and identify the person’s family.”

The first train affected was the 8.11am Stowmarket to London Liverpool Street.

Trains from London Liverpool Street heading towards Norwich terminated at Colchester while trains in the other direction stopped at Ipswich.

Customers with valid Abellio Greater Anglia tickets from Ipswich and Norwich to London were advised they could travel via Cambridge and use Abellio Greater Anglia trains to London Liverpool Street, or Great Northern train to London Kings Cross.

A rail replacement bus service, operated by Panther Travel, New Horizon and J&R Travel, ran a shuttle service between Colchester and Ipswich from around 10am.
