Crews from Braintree, Stansted, Great Dunmow and Saffron Walden were called to a chemical incident at Stansted Airport yesterday evening (Wednesday).
They were called to the scene at around 8.07pm.
The chemical, which has not yet been identified, is leaking from its container in the hold of a KLM cargo plane.
The affected pallet, which contained multiple cargo items, was removed from the plane before firefighters arrived.
A fire spokesman said the pallet containing the chemical has been isolated, and crews are currently working with airport personnel to make the area safe.
By 10.20pm, the fire crews finished their job and left the incident in the care of the airport and a specialist cleaning company.
