A charity dedicated to supporting young people is hoping to set up temporary accommodation next to its soon-to-be demolished home.
The youth centre occupied by Just42, in Woodbridge, was ordered for destruction by the county council in June, due to ‘irrevocable decay and the recent discovery of asbestos’.
The charity, which called the decision a “bolt from the blue”, has applied for a portable building to be used as an office in the parking area of the youth centre near Kingston Field, and for a container to be used for storage nearby, in order to ensure work continues at the same site.
Staff were shocked to learn of the decision to knock down the building, which the council’s head of finance, Richard Smith, would otherwise further deteriorate and be forced to close at even shorter notice.
Just42’s insistence on operating from the same location was echoed by Woodbridge county councillor Caroline Page, who said the charity must be found temporary accommodation while funds are raised to rebuild on the same site. Deputy mayor, Clare Perkins, also wants the youth club rebuilt in the same spot, while youth work manager Kevin Woods said the charity was determined to stay on-site.
Just one letter of concern has so far been received – regarding the temporary loss of parking spaces, and suggesting a nearby grass verge as a more suitable location.
Environmental Protection has no objections, but said office opening hours would be important to prevent noise at unsociable hours. The head of environmental services recommended that opening be limited to 8.30am-6pm on weekdays.
The application is pending consideration by the district council.
Meanwhile, the county council has agreed not to dispose of the site for a year, allowing time to “fully explore other community opportunities”.
The youth centre was registered as an Asset of Community Value last year. If the owner wants to sell, they must inform the group that nominated the asset, giving it a chance to register interest, and triggering a period when the asset can only be sold to a community interest group.
Just42 would like to hear from anyone who could provide a suitable temporary building and storage unit. Email Caroline Rutherford at caroline@just42.org.uk.
