The competitions is heating up in our quest to find the tallest sunflower in Suffolk.

After Ipswich gardener Keith Spurling laid down the gauntlet with his 10ft 6ins sunflower in Friday’s EADT and Ipswich Star, our readers have been rising to the challenge with submissions of their own.

Twins Sasha and Katya Creed, aged six from Bury St Edmunds, appear to have the tallest entry so far at 12ft.

Natasha Creed, their mother, said: “They have grown the sunflowers from seed and looked after them all summer.

“Everyone who comes by our house comments on how high thy are.”

Another tall entry came from Charlie Mackinlay, who said the tallest was 11ft 4ins.

Sisters Thea and Bea Brett, aged 10 and seven, were not far behind with their 11ft sunflower, grown in their grandparents garden in Witnesham.

Their mother Clare Brett said the girls had been growing sunflowers with their grandmother Janet Upshall every year, and thought this year’s taller flowers were down to the sunshine and rain.

Neil and Diana Wilbin of Spring Road in Ipswich also submitted entries, ranging from 1ft - 9ft 6ins, suggesting the height was due to the good quality of soil.
