In this week’s nostalgia, we take a look at Ipswich 5 Bolton 3 back in the year 2000 – not any run-of-the-mill game!
No, this was the play-off semi-finals, the two teams one game away from Wembley and evenly-poised at 2-2 after the first leg.
Play-off games are usually dramatic but no-one could have predicted what followed.
Dean Holdsworth scored either side of a Jim Magilton penalty (18) to give the hosts a slender lead. Magilton equalised again just after half-time, only for Allan Johnstone to put the Trotters back in front a minute later.
However, there was late drama as Magilton grabbed his hat-trick and second penalty of the night, in the 90th minute, to send the tie into extra-time. although not before Mike Whitlow was sent-off for the visitors.
Jamie Clapham scored the game’s third penalty in extra-time (94) to put Ipswich ahead, before Martijn Reuser (109) sent the Blues into a final shoot-out with Barnsley, Robbie Elliott having become the second visiting player to be dismissed earlier on.
