Emergency services including an air ambulance crew were sent to the scene of a serious crash in west Suffolk this afternoon.

Three ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, several police cars, three fire engines and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the A134, just south of its junction with the A1141, at 1.45pm today.

They arrived to find a car had come off the road and crashed into a ditch – and two people were trapped inside.

Initial reports suggested the car was smoking so firefighters were also dispatched to the scene.

Fire crews from Long Melford and Bury St Edmunds used cutting equipment to free the driver and passenger, who had both become trapped inside the car.

One of the patients has suffered minor injuries but the other is believed to have sustained serious injuries.

However, these are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing at this stage, a police spokesman said.

The ages and genders of the pair are not yet known but an air ambulance was sent to the scene to help transport one of them to hospital.

The A134 was shut both ways at the A1141 junction near Cross Green while crash investigation work was carried out at the scene.

Drivers were diverted via Cockfield village in both directions, but the road has since fully re-opened.
