Get the flags and the bunting out to help celebrate St Edmunds Day.

That’s the message from the thriving We Love Bury St Edmunds Facebook group as it is calling on the town to help celebrate the cult of the former patron saint over Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19, and St Edmunds Day itself, Monday, November 20.

Branded “Your Town Needs You” the events planned for the three days include a host of eventns including Denny Bros hosting the Crafty Foxes for a St Edmunds themed children’s creative drop-in to make a wolf key ring and a crown charm on the Saturday afternoon.

Moyse’s Hall is taking part in the national Takeover Day spearheaded by Kids in Museums, on the Friday, which will have a St Edmunds theme.

There will be family tours of the museum with a St Edmund and Beyond theme on the Saturday.

On the Sunday the museum will host a talk, between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, by historian Dr Francis Young entitled “How Edmund Became England’s Patron Saint” and a parade will be held on the Sunday afternoon in the Abbey Gardens.

Oakes Barn is the venue for Rotaract who are raising money for local charities with An Afternoon of Live Music, from 2pm to 6pm.

James Sheen, the owner of the website group, is encouraging businesses and individuals to get out the flags and bunting and turn the town red, white and blue.

“We want you, as one of the businesses of Bury St Edmunds, to display the flag of St Edmund of Suffolk, from the evening of November 17 through to the end of November 20.

“We want as many local businesses to be involved in these celebrations and to be willing to offer specific offers or discounts,” he said.

The group now consists of over 16,000 members spread all round the world and after being born on December 18, 2015, it built up a following of 9,000 members in the first 30 days.

Backing the initiative is the town’s MP Jo Churchill and the mayor of St Edmundsbury Terry Clements.
