Chris Louis has stepped down as Ipswich Witches’ team manager in a bid to save the flagging Premier League outfit’s season.
The former world number three and two-time British champion struggled to make the switch from rider to manager and has handed control to another former Witches boss, Brian Messenger.
The weekend’s disastrous Northern tour, which saw the Witches take just one point from meetings at Scunthorpe, Workington and Glasgow, was the final straw for Ipswich legend Louis, who will remain at Foxhall as team promoter.
“We have seen it in football where certain people have struggled to make the transition from player to manager, while others have succeeded,” said Louis, ahead of tomorrow night’s visit of Rye House.
“I thought I would be able to do it but I am happy to put my hands up and say it has not worked out how I would have liked.
“I have struggled to suppress my frustration and being in the background again will enable me to work closer with the team and with individuals.
“I am not a quitter, I just feel like we are taking a different approach. In terms of managing again, I would never say never.”
Following the weekend’s dismal showing, the Witches sit third in the Premier League, however most teams in the division have several fixtures in hand.
A lack of consistency has been Ipswich’s Achilles heel and a clearly talented crop of riders have fallen short of Louis’ high standards.
It will now be left to Messenger, who last managed Ipswich in 1997, to try and regain some positive momentum.
“Brian is pretty laid back and has experience in the job,” added Louis.
“I rode under him at the Witches and enjoyed it. His approach worked for me, he is very calm and nothing excites him.
“It will be a change for the riders.”
